12:16 pm on 23 February 2014

The Hurricanes have lost their opening match of the Super Rugby season going down 27-9 to the Sharks in Durban.

Their coach, Mark Hammett, was pleased with his teams' defence despite being dominated at scrum time and giving away two tries.

Hammett says his side absorbed pressure from the Sharks that would have broken previous Hurricanes teams.

SHARKS 27 (Willem Alberts, Lwazi Mvovo tries; Patrick Lambie con, 5 pens)

HURRICANES 9 (Beauden Barrett 2, Marty Banks pens) at Kings Park Stadium.

Next week, the Hurricanes travel to Cape town to play the Stormers who were beaten by the Lions on Sunday, 34-10.
