Australia captain Michael Clarke conceded his side were outplayed with bat and ball after they slumped to a 231-run defeat by South Africa in the second cricket test in Port Elizabeth.

South Africa wrapped up victory by taking nine wickets in the final session on the fourth day, the tourists collapsing from 151 for 1 to be all out for just 216.

A demonic four-over spell from Dale Steyn doing the damage, the paceman removing Michael Clarke and Steve Smith with consecutive balls before shattering the stumps of Brad Haddin for the second time in the match.

Clarke concedes Australia couldn't cope with Steyn's reverse swing.

The series is tied 1-all heading into the third and final test in Cape Town.
