The former All Blacks halfback Byron Kelleher has apologised for his involvement in a drink-fuelled scuffle following a road accident.

Kelleher, who plays for French Top 14 side Toulouse, was arrested on Saturday after the eary morning crash and fracas.

The 32-year-old was released from custody later the same day.

Kelleher, who injured his shoulder and right eye in the incident, says the incident after a collision should never have escalated as it did.

He's told a French newspaper he got "stupidly angry, due for sure to drink", was mixing with the wrong types and isn't proud of what happened.

Kelleher and two others are due in court in Toulouse on Otober 28 to answer charges relating to drink driving and violent behaviour.
