Dawkins goes blind in leading New Zealand to world championship title

Sprint cyclist New Zealand cyclist Ed Dawkins says he's gone blind in one eye after leading New Zealand to the team sprint title at the world champs in Colombia.

Dawkins, Sam Webster and Ethan Mitchell beat Germany by just over four one hundredths of a second to beat Germany in the gold medal ride off.

Germany led for much of the race but Dawkins rallied in the final 250metres.

But Dawkins says he's burst a blood vessel in his eye in the process and can only see out of one eye currently.

The result is a reversal of last year's final when New Zealand was beaten by Germany

The New Zealand men's 4000m pursuit team of Pieter Bulling, Dylan Kennett, Aaron Gate and Marc Ryan beat Russia in the bronze medal ride off.
