Hard work ahead for NZ in Davis Cup group final

9:23 am on 18 September 2009

New Zealand's Davis Cup tennis team will have to overcome heat, humidity longer matches and an unfamiliar surface if they're to end a four year absence from Asia Oceania Group One.

The Group Two final against the Philippines starts this afternoon in Manila and the team's captain James Greenhalgh says it'll be up to 40 degrees celsius in the small, noisy indoor arena which has an unique clay surface.

Greenhalgh says the dusty gray mixture of crushed shell and clay has a different consistency and reacts to the ball slightly differently, depending on how much it's been watered

He says that's why they arrived in Manila early so they could get some good practice sessions on it.

James Greenhalgh -- the draw has at least gone New Zealand's way with number one Dan King-Turner playing the opening rubber against the Filipino number two.
