Clarke survives pounding on rain-shortened day in Cape Town

The Australian cricket captain Michael Clarke played one of his more heroic innings on a rain-shortened second day of the series-deciding third test against South Africa in Cape Town.

Clarke was unbeaten 161 in his side's 494 for 7 when rain ended play for the day midway through the second session.

It was a courageous knock by the skipper who was struck a number of times on the opening day by the Proteas pace bowler Morne Morkel, including a sickening blow to the back of his head.

The weather forecast for the final three days is encouraging, and with South Africa's leading strike bowler Dale Steyn nursing a hamstring strain and unlikely to bowl for the rest of the match, Australia are well placed to win the match and remain unbeaten in South Africa for 44 years.
