The Australian cricketers formed a guard of honour as South Africa's retiring captain Graeme Smith walked out onto the Newlands ground in Cape Town last night to play his last test match innings.

But his final act was shortlived - three runs off three balls in 16 minutes, and he ended the three-test series with a total of just 45 runs from six innings.

Smith's career statistics are impressive though. From 117 test matches, all but eight of them as captain, he made 9,265 runs at an average of 48.25.

Going into the final day of the deciding test in Cape Town Australia are poised for victory as the Proteas are 71 for 4, chasing 511.
