Root to miss Windies T20 matches

9:08 am on 8 March 2014

The England batsman Joe Root will miss the Twenty20 cricket series against the West Indies after breaking his right thumb in their one-day international win in Antigua.

Root was struck by the third ball of his innings, but went on to make 107 as England won by 25 runs and claimed the three-match series 2-1.

The 23-year-old Yorkshireman has flown back to England for a scan on the injury.

It is not clear whether he will be fit enough to travel to Bangladesh for the ICC World T20 competition, which starts next weekend.

There are three T20 matches between the Windies and England in Bridgetown, with the first on Monday.
