The New Zealand middle distance runner Nick Willis has been disqualified after finishing fourth in the 1500 metres final at the world indoor athletic champs in Poland.

Willis stepped onto the inside of the track on the final turn into the home straight.

He appealed the decision believing as he hadn't passed anybody during the infringment the result should stand. However the appeal was rejected.

Despite being disappointed at losing the $10,000 in prizemoney, Willis says the race showed he can still foot it with the best in the world over the distance.

It's the second time Willis has been disqualified at the world indoor champs.

In 2008 in Valencia he was disqualified after a similar infringement.
