Gregorius nets as Football Ferns beat Finland

10:28 am on 13 March 2014

Striker Sarah Gregorius scored in her 50th match for New Zealand as the Football Ferns secured their first win of 2014, a 1-0 victory over Finland in the wooden spoon match at the 2014 Cyprus Cup.

Gregorius struck what proved to be the winner three minutes before half-time in Paralimni as New Zealand won the playoff match for 11th/12th position against their 23rd ranked opponents.

However after losing five of their six matches to open their 2014 campaign, and having not tasted victory since September, Football Ferns coach Tony Readings says frustration still remains.

He says the 1-0 win typified the Football Ferns' struggles to convert opportunities into goals, the coach believes New Zealand should have won more games this year and should have beaten Finland by a bigger margin.

The next scheduled match for New Zealand is against world number three Japan in Osaka on May the 8th, a match Readings says will provide a stern test of the required development in front of goal.
