World champion Ethan Mitchell has retained his New Zealand standing start time trial title on the opening day of the Track Cycling National Championships in Cambridge.

Southland's Stephanie McKenzie claimed the women's honours at the new velodrome.

Waimate teenager Dylan Kennett qualified fastest for tonight's 4000 metres individual pursuit final, where he'll ride off against Taupo's Patrick Bevin, while Waikato's Jaime Nielsen will try to defend her title in the women's 3000 individual pursuit against fellow London Olympian Lauren Ellis of Hinds.

The women's 500 and men's 1000 time trials are also tonight.
