Novak Djokovic has beaten Roger Federer in a thrilling three-set final to win the prestigious Indian Wells Masters tennis tournament in California.

Federer held serve then broke Djokovic in his opening service game and raced through the first set 6-3.

But Djokovic hit back to take the second set by the same 6-3 margin, the world number two becoming the first player to break the 32-year-old's serve all tournament.

However with the younger player serving for the match in the third set at 5-4, Federer rallied to break back and then held to love to force a tiebreak.

But Federer fell away from there and Djokovic won the tiebreak 7-3.

Earlier the Italian veteran Flavia Pennetta won the Indian Wells women's title with a clinical 6-2 6-1 rout of injured second-seed Pole Agnieszka Radwanska in the final.
