Perth and Adelaide have scored home wins over their respective NBL basketball semi-final opponents, but the big news of the final round didn't concern any of the finalists.
Minor premiers Perth (21-7) made it three wins out for four against the Hawks (13-15) with a 86-65 victory over the Wollongong side.
The Hawks clinched the fourth and last finals spot on Friday with a 100-87 home win over Sydney (12-16), the other team in contention for the playoffs.
Second placed Adelaide (18-10) barely held off the fast finishing Melbourne (15-13) with a 99-94 conquest of the third-placed visitors.
Defending champions New Zealand (11-17), who won the past three titles, finished seventh after a dejecting 95-83 home loss to to Cairns, (12-16) who were sixth.
It was only the second time in seven seasons the Breakers hadn't made the finals and a sad note on which to farewell veteran guard CJ Bruton.
