Japan rugby Test lucrative

The All Blacks' one-off Test in Japan has proved to be a real money-maker, as New Zealand Rugby announced a profit of $2.9 million for 2013.

The result is slightly down on the 2012 profit of $3.2 million, which was the first surplus for New Zealand Rugby since 2008, but well ahead of their budgeted profit of $790,000.

The 2013 result reflected a $10 million lift in income to $117 million and an increase in costs by $11 million to $114 million.

Part of the improvements in the national union's accounts came from last year's Japan Test, held in Tokyo en route to the end of year tour to Europe.

Chief executive Steve Tew says after their costs were covered, approximately $850,000 came back to the union.

New Zealand Rugby's long-running sponsorship deal with Steinlager has also been renewed through to 2019.

Meanwhile all 14 ITM Cup provincial unions reported profits for 2013 with a combined surplus of $3.3 million, helped by NZR increasing funding to provincial unions by $7.7 million over three years.
