Ponting blames pitch for near disaster

The Australia cricket captain Ricky Ponting has blasted the Centurion pitch after his team's Champions Trophy defence almost came to grief in their final group match.

Australia, needing to beat Pakistan to be sure of making the semi-finals, were chasing just 206, but from 138 for two with 20 overs left they crashed to 187 for eight before sneaking home by two wickets off the last ball of the match.

Australia will play England in Saturday morning's first semi-final in Centurion and Ponting says he's hoping for a better pitch.

Pakistan also qualified from group A, and they play New Zealand at the Wanderers in Johannesburg on Sunday morning.
