Chelsea shocked by Palace

9:16 am on 30 March 2014

English Premier League football leaders Chelsea have suffered a shock 1-0 loss at Crystal Palace to leave Manchester City firmly in the driving seat to win the title, after City battled to a 1-1 draw at Arsenal in the late kickoff.

Chelsea sank to their first defeat by Palace in 24 years after captain John Terry headed a Joel Ward cross into his own goal early in the second half at Selhurst Park, amid suggestions the ball touched home defender Joe Ledley's hand on the way in.

Jose Mourinho's Chelsea side stay top on 69 points but they can be overtaken by Liverpool, a point behind before they play Tottenham Hotspur on Monday, with City third on 67 points with two games in hand on the leaders and one on the Merseysiders.

David Silva opened the scoring for City in the 18th minute before Mathieu Flamini equalised soon after the break to earn a point for fourth-placed Arsenal who have 64.

If Chelsea fail to land a fifth top-flight title, it will be because they flopped too often this season against smaller teams.

Manager Jose Mourinho's conceding defeat in the title race after Sunday's shock loss at Palace, and it's because of their poor away form in their five Premier League defeats - Chelsea have only lost to teams outside the top four - all away at Palace, Stoke City, Aston Villa, Newcastle United and Everton.

Mourinho's team have won most of the matches against their title rivals this season, including a league double over Manchester City and a 6-0 thrashing of Arsenal the highlights of a string of successes against the elite clubs.

Chelsea were also dumped out of the Capital One Cup at second from bottom Sunderland and twice lost to rank Swiss outsiders Basel in the group stages of the Champions League.

Mourinho's men will look to bounce back from Saturday's defeat when they visit Paris St Germain in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Thursday.
