Broken neck a factor in ban

The National Rugby League has admitted the severity of the injuries suffered by Newcastle's Alex McKinnon played a part in the seven-week suspension, handed out to Melbourne's Jordan McLean over the tackle.

The NRL says it's providing counselling and other support for McLean, who last night had the usual three-week ban for the offence more than doubled due to a range of factors, including the fact McKinnon's neck was broken in the tackle.

McKinnon remains in hospital with spinal damage.

Melbourne are considering appealing McLean's suspension.

On Thursday night the New Zealand Warriors second-rower Sione Lousi fronts the NRL judiciary in a bid to beat a three-week ban for his tackle, that saw the Wests Tigers player Corey Patterson land on his head.
