Black Caps see silver lining

New Zealand's vice-captain star Brendon McCullum is hopeful the injury curse that struck during one day cricket's Champions Trophy will create increased competition for spots within the Black Caps .

They overcame the loss of allrounder Jacob Oram, batsman Jesse Ryder and paceman Daryl Tuffey in the group stage.

But skipper Daniel Vettori's withdrawal an hour before the final against Australia propved one injury too many with a hamstring problem depriving the side of his all-round talent, competitiveness and inspiration.

McCullum says reaching the final is a great achievement though and would generate greater competition for caps and confidence on the world stage.

New Zealand's next assignment is a limited-overs series against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi and Dubai in November, which should allow injured players time to recover.
