Injury blow for Breakers

8:30 am on 8 October 2009

The New Zealand Breakers will go into tonight's Australian National basketball league home match without the league's most valuable player after Kirk Penney had to head for the physio instead of training.

Penney has lower back pain so the Breakers will have to try to tame the Tigers without the high-scoring guard.

After starting with a good home win over Cairns the Breakers had narrow back to back losses in Adelaide and to the Tigers in Melbourne, and they'll be hoping Penney's back problem won't prove serious.

The Cairns Taipans host the Gold Coast Blaze tonight in a Queensland local derby to open round three of the NBL.
