The sacked England batsman Kevin Pietersen still hopes to return to international cricket and become the first England player to score 10,000 Test runs.

In an interview with the Indian Express newspaper the 33-year-old Pietersen also insists that former England skipper Andrew Strauss is a "good friend" despite their fallout over a text message scandal, saying the episode was the biggest regret of his career.

Pietersen, who was axed in February after England's disastrous tour to Australia, says he's not given up hope of an international comeback.

Pietersen is the fourth-highest run scorer in England's history and tops the list among current players.

He's scored who scored 8181 runs in 104 Tests after making his debut against Australia in 2005 and believes getting to 10,000 Test runs is a possibility.
