The Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson has apologised for criticising the fitness of referee Alan Wiley following United's 2-all draw with Sunderland in the English football premiership earlier this month.

On the Manchester United website, Ferguson apologised to Mr Wiley for any personal embarrassment that his remarks may have caused and to the FA for going public with his views.

He says in retrospect, he accepts that this could be deemed as expressing those views in an inappropriate forum.
