The New Zealand motor racing driver Scott Dixon has been pipped for the Indy Car Series Championship after finishing third in the season finale in Miami.

His Chip Gannasi team-mate Dario Franchitti took the lead and the title with 8 laps remaining when Dixon had to make a pit stop for fuel.... Australian Ryan Briscoe finished second.

Dixon, who was looking for his third title, started the day with a 4 point lead over Franchitti with another 3 points back to Briscoe.

It is the second time Dixon has lost the Championship on the last day of the season... he ran out of fuel while leading in 2007.

Franchitti finished the championship 11 points head of Dixon with 1 point back to Briscoe.

Dixon has previously won the championship in 2003 and 2008.
