NRL won't ban lifting tackles

6:03 am on 17 April 2014

The National Rugby League has announced a clampdown on players being placed in dangerous positions in lifting tackles.

The announcement comes after Newcastle prop Alex McKinnon suffered a serious spinal injury after going down awkwardly in a tackle against the Melbourne Storm.

The NRL deems a dangerous position as being where the head or neck of the tackled player goes below the horizontal level of his hips.

The NRL's head of football Todd Greenberg says any player that puts another in a dangerous position will face suspension but they're not banning lifting tackles altogether.
