There'll be no New Zealand side in the women's Australian national basketball league this year, but Basketball New Zealand says it's not giving up on the idea which foundered last year.

The Christchurch Sirens played their first season in the league in 2007-08, but withdrew when they couldn't find financial backing for a second year.

A recent proposal to have a side based in North Harbour has also fallen through with Basketball New Zealand cautious about committing to the project without strong financial backing.

BBNZ president John Gallaher says they're now working on a proposal that could see a New Zealand side return to the competition in 2011-12.
