Atletico title hopes dented by shock loss, Real held

Atletico Madrid have squandered a chance to all but wrap up their first Spanish La Liga football title since 1996.

A few days after qualifying for the Champions League final by winning at Chelsea, Atletico's surprise 2-0 defeat at Levante trimmed their lead at the top to three points over Barcelona, with two games remaining.

Barcelona's 2-2 draw at home with Getafe on Sunday opened the door for Real Madrid to then move to within one win of their crosstown rivals Atletico, with a game in hand.

But Real failed to take full advantage, drawing 2-2 at home to Valencia - and the Madrid giants only just drew too, needing a brilliant Cristiano Ronaldo volley in added time to rescue a point.
