The New Zealand Olympic Committee has added marathon runner Kimberley Smith and a women's relay team to the national squad for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

In addition to the 11 athletes already named, Smith will contest the marathon at her first Commonwealth Games, after competing at three Olympic Games in Athens, Beijing and London.

The Providence-based 32-year-old athlete holds every national record from 3000 metres to the marathon and finished 15th in the Marathon at London 2012, in a time of two hours, 26 minutes and 59 seconds.

Also selected is the women's 4x400 metres team, after they ran the qualifying time at a special attempt in Hamilton over Easter.

It is the first athletics relay team selected for a major championship since the Melbourne Commonwealth Games in 2006.

The individual athletes in the relay squad will be announced at a later date.
