2:08 pm on 13 May 2014

The former Australian and St George rugby league Immortal Reg Gasnier has died after a long illness.

The brilliant centre died a day before his 75th birthday.

Gasnier was considered one of the greatest players the game has seen, playing 39 Tests for Australia and 127 matches for the Dragons during their record-breaking 11-Premiership streak of the 1950s and 60s.

He remains Australia's youngest captain at 23 years and 28 days in 1962.

Gasnier's career ended suddenly in 1967 when he broke his leg against a French provincial team in a tour match.

In 1981 Gasnier was selected by Rugby League Week as one of the four original 'Immortals', of which there are now eight.
