Manchester United have confirmed the appointment of Dutchman Louis van Gaal as their new manager, with the job of reviving the club's fortunes after an ill-fated adventure with David Moyes.

Van Gaal, who has masterminded league titles at some of Europe's biggest clubs including Barcelona and Bayern Munich, and won the Champions League with Ajax Amsterdam, has signed a three-year contract at Old Trafford which the 62-year-old will take up once he has finished national duties with the Dutch team at the World Cup.

Van Gaal will be Manchester United's first manager from outside the United Kingdom.

Ryan Giggs, United's record appearance holder, has been confirmed as his assistant.
