Timaru shot putter Tom Walsh has finished sixth in a world-class field at the Diamond League meet in Eugene, Oregon - the third round of the IAAF Diamond League.

Walsh's best throw of 20.51 metres was just eight centimetres behind Poland's double Olympic champion Tomasz Majewski, but was more than a metre behind the American winner, Reese Hoffa, who threw 21.64 metres.

Walsh, the world indoor championship shot put bronze medallist, is the only New Zealander competing at the Prefontaine Classic.

Val Adams isn't competing as there's no women's event, while middle distance runner Nick Willis has opted not to compete.
