The Hurricanes Captain Conrad Smith says he's open to the Blues players Ma'a Nonu and Piri Weepu returning to the Hurricanes now a new coach has been appointed.

The Wellington Lions coach Chris Boyd will take over the franchise next year following the departure of Mark Hammett, who cut Nonu and Weepu loose in 2011.

Smith says he's good friends with the pair and he'd like to play with them, but he's not sure if they or the Hurricanes are ready to reunite.

He says as captain he'd have a say in the players' return, but it's up to them to ask.

It's reported Piri Weepu's contract with the Blues finishes at the end of this season, while Nonu's contract has another year to go.
