America's Cup rule changes

Fears that Peter Burling and Blair Tuke could have been forced out of the Olympics by the new America's Cup protocols have been allayed.

Under protocols issued last week for the 2017 event, Team New Zealand believed Burling and Tuke would have to get permission from the America's Cup holders Oracle to be able to compete at the Rio Olympics.

But Oracle has issued a revised version of the rules, skipper Jimmy Spithill saying they've clarified the rule that restricts America's Cup teams from racing as teams in events that conflict with the America's Cup.

He says it was never the intention of the rule to restrict sailors from competing at the Olympics as individuals, or in the smaller team events.
