Socceroos lose to Chile

Chile have opened their football World Cup campaign with a 3-1 win over Australia in their group B match in Cuiaba.

The Socceroos fell two goals behind inside 14 minutes with goals to Alexi Sanchez and Jorge Valdivia, before Tim Cahill got them back in it before half-time with a trademark header.

Cahill had another goal rubbed out for offside after half-time and the Chile goalkeeper was forced to produce a double save from striker Mark Bresciano soon afterwards.

But their fightback was undone at the death by Jean Beausejour's 92nd minute clincher.

The result leaves Chile in pole position to qualify for the next round alongside the Netherlands, after their shock 5-1 comeback win over Cup holders Spain in Salvador.
