Australia through to Hockey World Cup final

The Australian women have survived a nail-biting shoot-out to defeat the USA on penalties and progress to the Hockey World Cup final after a controversial clash in the Netherlands.

The Hockeyroos will play the winner of the second semi-final between the Netherlands and Argentina for the title,

Australia appeared to have secured victory following goals to Kellie White and the tournament's leading sharp-shooter Anna Flanagan, only to have American striker Kelsey Kolojejchick score a double - the second of which was shrouded in controversy.

But they could not be denied in the shootout, with goalkeeper Rachel Lynch standing tall to send them into Saturday's final.

Moments before they were outraged at a call which sent the match into extra time.

Kolojejchick's stunning equaliser with two minutes remaining was deflected in by Australian captain Madonna Blyth, who immediately complained to officials that it was high and had been sailing wide, which would be cause for a penalty.

But despite replays appearing to indicate the ball was indeed going wide, the goal stood and the match was forced into a shoot-out.

Australian goalkeeper Rachel Lynch made three brilliant saves, while White, Georgie Parker and Jodie Kenny held their nerve to polish off their attempts.
