The day Essendon Australian Rules players were dreading has arrived, with players at the AFL club receiving official word that they face anti-doping charges.

Legal action seems inevitable, and could result in suspensions that would end some players' careers, although the process will probably take years to play out.

It is the latest development in a saga that first became public light in February last year, when Essendon announced they

would come under a joint AFL and ASADA investigation over the club's supplements program in 2012.

The Melbourne Age newspaper is reporting that ASADA is issuing 34 players with the show cause notices.
