Because the Costa Ricans beat Italy and both won their opening games before Costa Rica beat Italy 1-0 on Saturday to book their place in the round of 16, England are eliminated from playoff contention.
Italy now need at least a draw from their final game against Uruguay, also on three points, to go through on goal difference, while Uruguay must win to progress to the knockout stages.
