The Giz third at Hidden Valley

New Zealand driver Shane van Gisbergen's finished third at the latest V8s Supercar event in Darwin, with compatriot Scott McLaughlin fourth.

Van Gisbergen had clocked the fastest practice time at the Hidden Valley Raceway.

Defending V8s champion Jamie Whincup won Saturday's opening 100-kilometre race, the Red Bull Racing driver leading from pole to flag at Hidden Valley Raceway to get his bid for a fourth-successive title back on track.

Team-mate and fellow Australian Craig Lowndes, celebrating his 40th birthday, finished second with Holden's van Gisbergen coming in third.

Championship leader Mark Winterbottom finished sixth following some late race duelling with Holden Racing Team's Garth Tander, who finished fifth.

The other men in championship contention, James Courtney and Fabian Coulthard, finished eighth and ninth respectively.
