The New Zealand tennis player Marina Erakovic has been beaten in the first round of singles at Wimbledon by the Croatian qualifier Ana Konjuh.

The 16-year-old Konjuh, who was last year's world junior number one, won in 3 sets 6-3, 4-6, 6-love.

Erakovic, who split from her coach 2 weeks ago, says Konjuh was a big hitter, was extremely tough and has a big future.

The Aucklander says it's tough to play a qualifier because they've had 3 good wins, while her grasscourt preparation wasn't ideal.

Konjuh, who is the youngest player in the draw and won two junior grand slam titles last year, will play Yanina Wickmeyer in the second round after the Belgian upset Australian Sam Stosur in the first round.

Erakovic will also doubles at Doubles.
