Italy knocked out of World Cup as Uruguay bite their way into last 16

Uruguay have qualified for the last 16 at the football World Cup in Brazil after claiming a tense 1-nil win over a 10-man Italy, who have been dumped out of the tournament.

The ill-tempered affair was settled by an 81st minute Diego Godin goal which knocked Italy out in the group stages for the second consecutive World Cup, the first time that's happened since 1962 and 1966.

The match was marred by controversy with Uruguay and Liverpool striker Luis Suarez appearing to bite Italian Giorgio Chiellini on the shoulder while they tussled outside the Italian penalty box.

Suarez is no stranger to controversies of the oral variety, he was banned for ten Premier League games last season for biting Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic.

Also this morning England were held to a goalless draw by Costa Rica in their final group match at the tournament, having already been resigned to exiting after the group stage.

Costa Rica finish top of group D, with Uruguay second, continuing the success of the South American sides in Brazil.
