The Netherlands and Costa Rica have advanced to the quarterfinals of the football World Cup in Brazil, with narrow wins over Mexico and Greece respectively.

The Netherlands scored two late goals to beat Mexico 2-1 while 10-man Costa Rica bounced back from conceding a stoppage time equaliser which left the score one all to eliminate Greece 5-3 on penalties.

The Dutch forward Arjen Robben was at the centre of another diving controversy after he won the injury-time penalty to beat Mexico, who'd reached Brazil after beating the All Whites in qualifying.

The Netherlands and Costa Rica now play in the quarterfinals.

The round of 16 continues tomorrow with France playing Nigeria and Germany playing Algeria.
