The American sprinter Justin Gatlin has run the fastest hundred metres of the year to win the Lausanne Diamond League Athletics meeting.

Gatlin clocked 9.8 seconds - only six sprinters have gone faster.

Fellow American Tyson Gay, who was competing in his first race since ending a one-year doping ban ran 9.93 seconds to finish second.

Gay was banned in June 2013 after testing positive for a banned anabolic steroid in two out-of-competition tests.

His ban, reduced from two years by the United States Anti-Doping Agency due to Gay's cooperation, ended on June 23rd.

Gatlin has also served a doping ban.

Having won Olympic 100 metres gold in the Athens Games in 2004 and bronze in London eight years later, he served a four-year ban between 2006-10.

Meanwhile, Jamaican sprinter Asafa Powell has withdrawn from this weekend's Diamond League meeting in Paris due to injury.
