The Swiss tennis great Roger Federer could take the grand slam title-record outright on Monday morning when he meets Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final.

Federer has won 17 grand slams the same as Pete Sampras, but is evenly matched with Djokovic having won 17 of their 33 encounters.

To reach the final, Djokovic halted the grasscourt charge of talented Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, the Serb beating the 11th seed 6-4 3-6 7-6 7-6 in an exhilarating see-saw contest.

Federer also won in four sets to book his place against Djokovic, the Swiss ace beating 23-year-old Canadian Milos Raonic 6-4 6-4 6-4 on Centre Court.

It's Djokovic's third Wimbledon final in four years - he's won once, in 2011 - while Federer's only lost one final of the eight he's reached.

That was arch-rival Rafael Nadal's famous triumph over the 32-year-old in 2008, in a match many rank as the greatest ever.
