Northern Districts are the only outright winners following the first round of cricket's Plunket Shield four day competition with Central Districts and Canterbury taking first innings points.

Northern needed only three days to complete a 10 wicket win over Otago in Dunedin .

Auckland were 232 for three in their second innings in Napier when the captains called it quits at tea after Central Districts made 418 for nine in their first innings in reply to Auckland's 403.

And when bad light stopped play at the Basin Reserve Canterbury were 191 for six after being set 255 to beat Wellington, who made 214 in their first innings before Canterbury replied with 222.
