New leader on Tour de France

11:08 am on 14 July 2014

The German cyclist Tony Martin powered to an impressive victory on the ninth stage of the Tour de France which produced a new overall leader, Frenchman Tony Gallopin.

Martin, the time trial world champion, attacked only 15 kilometres into the 170-kilometre stage and rode solo for the last 60 kilometres to win only his third Tour stage.

Gallopin took the overall leader's yellow jersey after Vincenzo Nibali's Astana team did not chase hard to catch a counter-attacking group.

Gallopin is the first Frenchman to wear the yellow jersey since Thomas Voeckler in 2011, and his advantage is a minute 34 seconds.
