Dual Tour winner crashes out with broken shin

The dual Tour de France winner Alberto Contador has withdrawn from this year's race after breaking a shinbone during the 10th stage.

The Spaniard was treated by race doctors for several minutes after a heavy crash during a descent, but rejoined the race and pedalled for another 15 kilometres before being forced to pull out.

Contador's team manager Bjarne Riis said he'd need surgery on the shinbone, and he also injured an elbow.

He's the second high profile rider to pull out of this year's race after the defending champion Chris Froome of Britain crashed during the fifth stage.
