Kiwi jockey celebrates Sydney Premiership victory

7:00 am on 31 July 2014

James McDonald has joined a select group of New Zealand jockeys to have won the Sydney Metropolitan Championship, and he's done it in only his second full season across the Tasman.

The 22 year old McDonald secured the title with his first ride of the day, on a New Zealand-bred horse Bascule, trained by New Zealander Chris Waller.

This season McDonald's mounts have won stakes of just over 13 million dollars in one of the most competitive riding arenas in the world.

He's the first New Zealander to win the Sydney Premiership since Brian York in 2001.
