The outstanding winger who will join forces with Sonny Bill Williams is expected to provide impact both on and off the field for the Chiefs.

Chiefs coach Dave Rennie says Gear ticks all the boxes, he's a good man, very professional and experienced.

Rennie says Gear's also a hell of a player, powerful, quick and a quality finisher.

Gear played the last of his 14 Tests against Italy in 2012 before taking up a lucrative two-year deal with French club Toulouse.

Gisborne-born Gear has also represented the New Zealand Maori, the New Zealand sevens team - with whom he won a Commonwealth Games gold medal in 2010 - New Zealand U21s and U19s.

He has played Super Rugby for the Highlanders and Hurricanes and provincial rugby for Poverty Bay, North Harbour and Wellington.
