The 24-year-old Cannondale rider headed into the 180-kilometre ride from Cordoba to the uphill finish in Ronda in sixth place overall.

However he finished 92nd on the stage, more than three minutes behind the winner John Degenkolb of Germany, who scored his second straight stage win on the Vuelta a Espana.

Bennett is now 44th overall, three minutes and 43 seconds behind the tour leader, Australian Michael Mathews of the Orica GreenEdge team.

Bennett is one of four New Zealanders in the Spanish tour. The others are Greg Henderson in the Lotto-Belisol team, Jesse Sergent of Trek and Sam Bewley of Orica GreenEdge.
