British bookmakers have reacted to Manchester United's humiliating 4-0 loss to Milton Keynes Dons in the Capital One Cup by slashing the odds on manager Louis van Gaal leaving the club.

William Hill, who had been offering 66-1 against the Dutchman becoming the next Premier League manager to go, have cut those odds to 12-1.

In the three matches since van Gaal took over, United have had two losses and a draw, and there are suggestions that the owners might cut their losses and rebuild.

Meanwhile, the former Crystal Palace manager Neil Warnock has returned to the club which he left in 2010 on a two-year deal, starting this weekend with a Premier League match at Newcastle United.

Manchester United sank to new depths when they crashed out of the English League Cup in the second round following a 4-0 defeat at League One (third-division) Milton Keynes Dons.

United announced the signing of Angel di Maria from Real Madrid in a British-record $120 million deal shortly before kick-off, but they were brought down to earth with a painful bump as a second-string team fell apart.

United again had trouble in defence, which left manager Louis van Gaal still searching for his first competitive win as manager.

United's defeat mirrored what had happened on their last appearance in the second round in 1995, when they fell to third-tier York City, and means a potential path to silverware has been shut off before the end of August.

Meanwhile West Ham were also knocked out, with All Whites captain Winston Reid scoring an own goal as the Hammers eventually lost in a penalty shootout to Sheffield United.
