The Wellington Phoenix have been beaten 2-1 by a 10-man Newcastle Jets team in a pre-season football friendly in Australia.

The Phoenix had a couple of chances early through Jeremy Brockie, Roly Bonevacia and new signing Michael McGlinchey.

However the Jets scored first through a penalty after Andrew Durante was ruled to have handled the ball in the box in the 22nd minute.

The Jets were reduced to 10 men shortly after the half-time interval when Ben Kantarovski was given his second yellow card for a rash challenge on Albert Riera.

The Phoenix leveled the scores in the 60th minute after the Jets' defence was stretched allowing Brockie to find space on the edge of the area, where he shook off a pair of Jets defenders before finishing low past the keeper.

The Jets grabbed the winner in the 76th minute.

The Phoenix play Sydney United on Tuesday and Sydney FC on Friday.
