New Zealand gold medallist to join IOC

The 1976 Olympic gold medalist Barry Maister is set to become New Zealand's eleventh International Olympic Committee Member after being nominated by IOC President Jacques Rogge.

Maister represented New Zealand in the men's hockey team at the Montreal Games and has been heavily involved with the Olympic Movement and promoting sport in Oceania.

The 61-year-old will be one of six new committee members and says he will use his position on the IOC to focus on youth development in sport.

The official ratification process will take place at the Vancouver.Winter Olympics in February next year.
